Training Wheels will kick off fall programming in September. Services will include:

Leap Into Literacy Programs: Children’s programs for ages birth to five will be presented to daycares, preschools, Head Start, libraries, and community sites.   Programs will promote the six early literacy skills children need for school readiness. Program components will include stories, songs, fingerplays, and ready to learn literacy activities.

Parent Newsletters: Monthly newsletters will be sent out to families   participating in programs. In addition, newsletters will be shared with Union, Umatilla, and Morrow Counties.

Parent Pages: Monthly theme pages will be distributed to parents that highlight the monthly theme and provide book suggestions, activities, songs, and fingerplays.

Free Books: Free children’s books will be distributed to program and   community sites. Community sites include the Food Bank, Training and    Employment/Employment Department and the Health Department. In addition Literacy Link will sponsor book giveaways once a month at a community and agency site.

Preschool Science Programs: This year, the Library will be offering preschool science programs to the daycares and preschools. The goal of the program is to promote literacy through science activities.



Programs for schoolage children will include:

Training Wheels in the Schools: Science-based literacy programs will support Oregon State benchmarks for classes Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This program will be offered during the winter at public schools.

Up & Away: Afterschool programs will be presented in the Enterprise Public Library, the Joseph Public Library, and in the    Wallowa School in partnership with Explorations. The afterschool programs will promote literacy through science, math, art, and      literature activities for 1st through 4th graders.

Funding for this year’s services include Wallowa County, Wallowa County Commission on Children and Families, Oregon State Library, Oregon Community Foundation, Juan Young Foundation, PGE   Foundation, Building Healthy Families, and the Wildhorse Foundation.

Literacy Link

Literacy Link is a collaborative partnership between the Library and Building Healthy Families to promote family literacy skills.

The Wallowa County Library co-hosted the Library Playgroup with Building Healthy Families. “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” by Charles G Shaw was read to the children and each family received their own copy to take home. Building Healthy Families provided the story-extension activity “Shaving Cream Play” from the Parents As Teachers curriculum. Children played with the shaving cream, and then created their own clouds from the cream onto construction paper. Additional material was distributed that included “What is Special About this Age.”

The Community Event for July was held in Wallowa during the Tamkaliks Celebration and the city wide yard sale events. Free literacy materials, parenting information, and free children’s books were distributed to 33 families that included 20 children.

In addition, 353 free children’s books were distributed to Building Healthy Families, the WC Health Department, Food Bank, and Training &Employment/Employment Department.

“Deliver-Me-A-Book!”

Know someone who cannot get out to their city library? Refer them to “Deliver-Me-A-Book!” We will bring books free of charge to their doorstep. We have large print, magazines, VCR tapes, and audio books available for checkout. Call 426-3969 for more information.

The Libraries of Wallowa County have received a grant from the Collins Foundation to update their libraries to a web-based automation system.
Patrons can now view books and materials in the city and counties libraries from the comfort of their homes. To access the site go to:

Patrons can search by library or all sites for a particular book or author.
